Over 41000 Passengers Stranded in India due to Volcanic Ash Cloud

Due to closure of global air traffic to European and North American cities because of volcanic ash from Iceland, more than 41,435 passengers are stranded in New Delhi and Mumbai airports, reported PTI.
“The Ministry of Civil Aviation has set up a control room, headed by Joint Secretary Prashant Shukul, with officials from Ministry of External Affair and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to clear the backlog,” Civil Aviation Secretary M Madhavan Nambiar was quoted as saying.
He said that despite resumption of services by Jet Airways and Air India to the US, situation was still grim, report said.
The Ministry has urged the air carriers not to ‘take benefit of the situation’ by charging higher fares for the tickets, said report.
He informed that India was talking to Greece about granting ‘third and fourth freedom’ rights which allow passengers from India to disembark and aboard at Athens and take another flight or train to Europe, report said.
He said that five of Air India’s planes were stuck at various stations because of the closure of airports, said report.
“Two are stuck at London, one each at Frankfurt, Chicago and New York,” he was quoted as saying.
