Nuke Safeguard Agreement between India, IAEA Comes into Effect

February 4, 2010 Visionmp.com news service

US President Barack Obama has said that the safeguard agreement regarding civilian nuke facilities between India and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has come into effect, said media reports.

A memorandum was issued to the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as mandated by the United States-India Nuclear Cooperation Approval and Nonproliferation Enhancement Act regarding the safeguards agreement between India and the IAEA, said reports.

Obama gave the above information in the memorandum, reports said.

Also, Obama certified that India had filed a declaration of facilities – as mandated by the agreement – that is ‘not materially inconsistent’ with the facilities and schedule described in the Separation Plan presented in the Parliament on May 11, 2006, taking into account the later initiation of safeguards than was anticipated in the Separation Plan, said reports.
