Karunanidhi Congratulates Meira Kumar

Describing it as a “forerunner” to the enactment of 33 per cent women reservation in legislative bodies, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi has welcomed unanimous nomination of five time MP, Meira Kumar for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

Karunanidhi said that Kumar’s being the first woman to be elected for the Speaker’s post is“sweet news” and the joy doubled since “she is the daughter of Jagjeevan Ram, who did great service as a Union Minister for a long time.”

The TN Chief Minister even described the nomination of Kumar, who recently resigned as Union Water Resources Minister, as a “forerunner” to the (33 per cent) reservation for women in Parliament and Assemblies even as Sonia Gandhi was guiding the UPA.

“All should welcome the nomination of a woman as the Speaker to the Lok Sabha,” he said in a statement here.
