Forest Minister Rajendra Shukla has revealed that since 2006, there has been no tiger census in the state.

In response to a query of Congress MLA Mahendra Singh in State Assembly, Shukla said that only in Panna tiger reserve, census was held in 2009 and in the counting only two tigress, translocated from other parks, were found.

He said that the census conducted in 2004 was completed in 2005 and so no separate census was done in that year.

The minister informed that in 2006, census was held landscape wise instead of reserve wise and abutting areas were taken into account. It was the last census and no counting has taken place since, he said.

As per the landscape wise census in 2006, Kanha Landscape had 89 tigers, followed by Bandhavgarh 47, Pench 33, Panna 24 and Satpuda had 39 big cats.

The Landscape wise census was conducted by taking into account various tiger ranges spread in these tiger reserves.
