Maoists Get Weapons from Outside, Says Chidambaram

October 24, 2009 Visionmp.com news service

A day after a call to abjure violence to Maoists, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that rebels are acquiring weapons through Bangladesh, Myanmar and possibly Nepal.

He said that Naxalism remains the biggest internal security threat to India and snubbed intellectuals who still endeavour to “romanticize” to the naxalites.

In an interview to a news agency, the minister said that the government is practical enough to understand that the Naxals would not lay down arms.

About West Bengal government, he said that it has “learnt a lesson very late” after the Lalgarh operation but didn’t comment on the state government’s decision to secure the release of an abducted police official by not opposing the bail pleas of about 20 pro-Maoist trials.
