A Manipur government official has been abducted by suspected Kuki militants for a huge ransom of Rs one crore, said media reports.

Farm Overseer (FO) Nameirakpam Nabakumar, 56, was kidnapped by the armed militants when he was on his way from home to office on May 20, said reports.

His home is situated in Luwangsangbam, about eight km north of Imphal, and office is at a sericulture project centre at Sangaipat, reports said.

The kidnapping came to fore when some callers claiming to be militants of the United Kuki Liberation Army-Military Council (UKLA-MC) rang up the family on Thursday night and informed them that Nabakumar was in their custody, said reports.

The callers demanded an immediate payment of Rs 50 lakh by his department for his safe release, reports said.

A few days later, the militants called again raising their demand of ransom to Rs one crore ‘since the initial amount of Rs 50 lakh was not paid promptly as asked’, and threatened to kill the official if the entire amount was not handed over, said reports.

At the sericulture department, several employees launched a sit-in protest yesterday against the abduction and appealed to the ultras to release the official unharmed without any pre-condition.
