Facing criticism for being absent from Delhi quite often, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has said in her defence that Kolkata is her homeland, said media reports.

“Delhi is not my home. When there is no Parliament session, why should I stay in Delhi? Kolkata is my homeland,” the minister was quoted as saying while addressing a public meeting in Kolkata last night.

She was addressing the meeting for campaigning for her Trinamool Congress candidates in the coming civic polls.

Minister’s statement came in the backdrop of recent criticism by Opposition, including CPM, accusing her of ignoring duty as Railway Minister in the wake of Sunday’s stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, which left two persons dead and eight others injured.

“It is a ploy by the CPM to send me to Delhi. No one can force out Mamata,” she was quoted as saying.
