BHOPAL: Parasram Gurjar a grand old man believed to be 125-year-old and the oldest man in India passed away in Bhopal on Saturday.

Gurjar a native of Talkesari village in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, left behind his only surviving 75-year-old son Mohanlal and a family consisting 14 grand children and three great grand children. His three sons and a daughter predeceased him. He took his last breath at his grandson’s residence in the state capital.

According to sources he seldom fell ill, had no ailments and did most of his daily chores by himself till the end came.

“This afternoon, he asked me to bring Narmada Jal. He had few drops of water and then collapsed. We took him to the Hamidia hospital where the doctors declared him dead”, said his grandson Hakam Singh.

He said the body has been sent to his native Talkesari village in neighbouring Hoshangabad district where the funeral will take place on Sunday on the banks of river Narmada, about eight kilometres from the village.

In October this year, the state government had also conferred the old man its “Shatayu Samman” an honour being given to those people who have attained the age of 100 years.

Though his family did not have proof to prove his age, Gurjar’s family members quoted their “Vanshwali” – the family tree – to claim that it mentioned Parasram’s age as 22 years old in 1908. According to this calculation, he was born in 1886.
