In 24 hours, 7 killed and nearly 100 injured during clashes over CAA in Delhi

New Delhi: Northeast Delhi continues to see intense violence on Tuesday morning a day after protesters for and against the controversial citizenship law clashed and threw stones at each other, set vehicles and shops on fire.
Seven people, including a cop, were killed and nearly 100 were injured in Monday’s unprecedented violence. Over 48 police personnel were injured and have been hospitalised. Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Lieutenant Governor and representatives of political parties.
Three firefighters have been injured after a group of people set a fire engine ablaze and threw stones at another. The violence began on Monday hours before United States President Donald Trump, was expected in the capital. Trump is expected to spend the day in Delhi for the operative part of his state visit.
Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal held a meeting with MLAs and officials from the violence-hit areas. He tweeted, “I am very worried about the prevailing situation in certain parts of Delhi. All of us together should make all efforts to restore peace in our city. I again urge everyone to shun violence.” “The police personnel could not do anything because they were not getting orders from their seniors. I will raise this with Amit Shah-ji. They can’t decide whether there should be tear-gassing or lathi-charging without orders from above,” he said at a press conference.
Home Minister Amit Shah also held a late-night meeting with the Delhi police chief, the Union Home Secretary and other senior officials.
Fresh violence has been reported from northeast Delhi areas such as Karawal Nagar, Maujpur, Bhajanpura, Vijay Park and Yamuna Vihar. While stones were thrown neighborhoods such as Maujpur, the fire department has been getting more SOS calls.
Delhi ministers Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain and other Aam Aadmi Party MLAs camped outside Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s residence late on Monday night to discuss with him the law and order situation. Baijal said he had “instructed Delhi Police to ensure law and order is maintained”.
Government sources said the violence in the national capital appears to have been “orchestrated” by some for publicity as it comes at a time when Donald Trump is visiting the country.
