IAEA Chief Doesn’t Expect India to Sign NPT

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohammad ElBaradei, who has been awarded prestigious Indira Gandhi Peace Prize, has said that he does not expect India to ink the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but thinks that Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) could be more “acceptable”.
Talking to a private news channel, he said: “I do not expect India to sign the NPT in its present form… Maybe the CTBT would be more acceptable.”
His statement has significance as it came following adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Security Council asking all non-NPT countries, including India, to sign NPT.
It may be mentioned that India has already made it clear that it will not ink the agreement as a non-nuclear state, for atomic arsenals are integral to its security.
ElBaradei said that India should lead efforts for achieving complete nuclear disarmament, an idea that it first put forward as back as in 1948.
According to a press release issued by the news channel, the IAEA chief said that the world was looking to India for the future of nuclear energy research and development.
Reacting to reports of Iran developing secret uranium enrichment plant, ElBaradei said that Tehran was “on the wrong side of the law” by not making public its plans when construction started.
“Iran has been on the wrong side of the law in so far as the IAEA regulation to inform the agency at an earlier date,” ElBaradei said.
