Twin Blasts in Russia’s Dagestan, Nine Killed

As many as nine people, including a top regional police official, have been killed in twin bombings in Russia’s restive North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, reported BBC.

According to report, a car bomb exploded at around 0830 (0430 GMT) outside the offices of the local interior ministry and the FSB security agency in the town of Kizlyar.

Some 35 minutes later, another bomb went off on the same street, said report.

Officials said that the chief of police in Kizlyar, Col Vitaly Vedernikov, was killed in the second blast, report said.

He was in a crowd assembled at the site of the car bomb, in which a suicide bomber intruded and blew himself up, said report.

Kizlyar is situated close to Dagestan’s border with Chechnya.

Last month, Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov threatened that “the zone of military operations will be extended to the territory of Russia… the war is coming to their cities”.

Violence in Dagestan has escalated following a crackdown on militants in Chechnya. In June, its interior minister was shot dead.

Following Monday’s twin bombings at Moscow metro station, Russia is already on alert.
