Gunmen Shot Army Official Dead in Islamabad

A high-ranking army officer and another soldier have been killed by gunmen during an ambush in Islamabad, said police.

Officials said that two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on the soldiers’ vehicle on Thursday morning in a residential area of the city inhabited by many army officers. In the fire, another soldier in their vehicle was injured. The gunmen soon ran away and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

It may be mentioned that in recent weeks, terrorists and gunmen launched many strikes on targets including police training centres, the army’s headquarters, an Islamic university and a United Nations office. Subsequently, most schools across the country are scheduled to remain closed until Sunday because of security fears.

The strikes have been analysed as a revenge for the army offensive against Taliban in South Waziristan.

Pakistani government forces have launched a ground operation on several fronts in the South Waziristan tribal region. Forces are targeting an area considered the stronghold of the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, Hakimullah Mehsud.
