Telangana Peaceful on Second Day of Protests

Despite continued protest against the Centre, the Telananga remained largely peaceful on Friday, with no shutdown on Christmas eve.

The all-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) withdrew its shutdown call in view of Christmas and most parts of Hyderabad and the nine other districts of the region were limping back to normalcy.

However, a group of students at Osmania and Kakatiya University carried on with their fast-unto-death, insisting that the Centre should instantly commence the process of creation of separate Telagana state.

It may be mentioned that additional paramilitary forces airlifted from Punjab and Delhi were deployed at Osmania University and other parts of Hyderabad to maintain law and order.

On second day of protests, shops and business establishments reopened but petrol pumps remained closed. Besides, the state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) partially restored bus services in Hyderabad and in other parts of Telangana.

According to officials, bus services were recommenced only on those routes where police had assured protection. Still, bus services from Hyderabad to Vijayawada and other cities in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema remained suspended.
