Blast Rocks Guwahati Market, One Dead, 15 Wounded

One person was killed and 15 others injured when powerful bomb ripped through a busy market in Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday. The explosion coincided with senior Congress leader Pranab Mukhejee’s visit to the city.

According to media reports the bombing was epicentered at the busy Lal Ganesh area barely three km away from where Mukherjee was addressing reporters.

Correspondents attributing the information to local police say the bomb was planted on a parked motor cycle and went off at a time when the area was teeming with evening shoppers and vendors.

Mukherjee addressing the reporters had expressed fears of terror strikes during the elections.

“We fear terrorist attacks. But having said that, we are ready to counter such threats,” the external affairs minister was quoted as saying by IANS..

He said that the Pakistan’s north had become a breeding ground for terrorists.

As external affairs minister in the UPA government, Mukherjee has spearheaded the Indian diplomatic offensive launched in wake of the macabre 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai.
