BEIJING: A big series of cyber attacks uncovered recently, hackers were found to have broken into the networks of the three sequences i.e. Indian government, United Nations and US defence firms.

McAfee a security company, which discovered the intrusions, refusing to reveal the name said it believed there was one “state actor” behind the attacks.

However, one security expert said the evidence points to China as some of the targets had information that would be of particular interest to Beijing.

The long list of victims in the five-year campaign include the governments of India, the US, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam and Canada. One of the longest attacks was on the Olympic Committee of an Asian nation in the run-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said an expert. In the case of the UN, the hackers broke into the system of its secretariat in Geneva in 2008, hid there for two years, and combed through secret data.

“We need to build the widest possible shared understanding of what constitutes acceptable behaviour in cyberspace,” a spokeswoman for Britain’s most secretive spy agency, GCHQ said.
