Stating that it has policy of “zero tolerance” for racial attacks on Indian students on its soil, Australia has denied such incidents having resulted in a decrease in number of students enrolling in universities in the country.
Julia Gillard, Australian Deputy Prime Minister, currently on Indian visit, said: “Our Government has very clearly said that it has got zero tolerance for any form of violence against Indian students or against anyone else in Australia and we pride ourselves as a multi-cultural nation.”
In an interaction with students of Lady Sri Ram College in New Delhi, Gillard tried to put to an end the seeming worries about studying in Australia in the wake of a spate of attacks on Indian students.
She said that the state governments in her country have “geared up with police crackdowns. There are now more police visible on the streets patrolling those areas where there have been problems”.

To say something in a speech and implement on ground are two different things. Some how I have a feeling, that they are giving it a tacit support to the attacks. Till date no action has been taken, no one convicted. How long can you satisfy people by making diplomatic statements?
I have no hesitation to comment that these attacks have the State backing, somewhat similar to what Pakistan has been doing on terrorism. Racism is in the blood of Australians. If that wasn’t true then why do nasty things happen on the cricket ground.
The genesis of racial attacks needs a dig into the history of Australian white population.
In 18th century Australia was understood to be a remote and unattractive land for European population. Britain, after loss of American colonies, was faced with overcrowded domestic prisons. Food shortages, social upheaval caused by industrialization and urbanization led to increase in crime and prison population. In 1786 the British government announced to establish penal settlement at Botany Bay (now new South Wales). It was considered the best way to get rid of prison population, as the penal settlement was self sustaining and saved government of huge expenditure. That was the beginning of permanent settlement of whites in Australia.
Coming back to the point, that criminalization is in the DNA of population, passed on over generations. One can see this behavior whether in social life or on the cricket field. Whenever threatened by the other races, whether in field of education, jobs or games it is only their natural behavior that gets manifested. Why blame them? They need to be sympathized with.
If they want that outsiders should vacate their country, then they should say it openly. Are they worried that Indians would do the same thing to them as they did to the aborigines of the land?
