With the highest level of intervention failing to prevent attacks on Indians in Australia, Nitin Garg a 21-year-old Indian youth with permanent residency in the country suffered fatal stab wounds at the hands of unidentified assailants in a Melbourne park at around 2200 hours (around 0330 hrs IST) on Saturday.

Garg succumbed to the wounds at the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was shifted after he collapsed some 300 meters from a nearby fast food joint that employed him part time.

Reporting the death – the first from a slew of attacks on Indians – media agencies citing the local police said there was no evidence to suggest that the brutal attack was an act of racial targeting.

Last year angry protests erupted in India after community members were repeatedly targeted in Australian cities. Highlighting its zero tolerance policy for race related crime, Canberra, however, claimed its cities and campuses were safe for Indians.
