Army Officer Killed in Encounter with Militants in J&K

In an encounter with militants, a senior army officer has been killed in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, said media reports citing police.

According to reports, Colonel Neeraj Sood, commanding officer of 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), was critically injured in a gunbattle with militants in Saiwan village in Lolab Valley, about 105 km from Srinagar.

“Colonel Neeraj was critically wounded in the militant attack. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Kupwara. However, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital late on Tuesday night,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying.

“Reinforcements have been rushed to the area. Searches in the area continue,” he was quoted as saying.
