Anil Ambani Withdraws Defamation Suit against Big Brother Mukesh

June 8, 2010 Visionmp.com news service

Anil Ambani has withdrawn a defamation suit against his elder brother Mukesh, said media reports.

Anil had in 2008 sued Mukesh and the New York Times newspaper in the Bombay High Court for 10000 crores for comments made about him in a New York Times profile on Mukesh published in June that year.

Counsels for Anil termed parts of the article referring to Anil as ‘false, defamatory, malicious and totally baseless…’

The article painted Anil as the overseer of a sort of ‘intelligence agency’ run by Reliance which monitored, among others, bureaucrats, politicians, and competitors, through a network of ‘lobbyists and spies’.

Also, it quoted Mukesh as saying that following split of their father’s empire in 2005, Mukesh didn’t follow this practice.

Anil’s advocates have not explained the reason for his decision to withdraw the suit, reports said.

The brothers have been inching their way towards a fragile peace since May, when their corporate war, one of India’s largest and most-publicized, reached its climax in the Supreme Court, and gave Mukesh a decisive edge.
